An Efficient Implementation of Game Provenance in DBMS

چکیده
Explaining why a certain answer is in the result ofa query or why it is missing from the result is important for manyapplications including auditing, debugging data, and answeringhypothetical questions about data. Both types of questions, i.e.,why provenance and why-not (missing answer) provenance havebeen studied extensively. Provenance games, a game-theoreticapproach to provenance, can provide a unified view on why andwhy-not provenance. The power of provenance games, however, comes at the cost of complexity: a direct approach for computinggame provenance instantiates a large game graph with all possibletuples that can be formed from values of the active domainusing the rules of a query evaluation game. In this work, wepresent a new relational database approach for computing amuch smaller subgraph of the provenance game that is relevantto the user’s provenance question. In addition to avoiding theevaluation of a non-stratified win-move Datalog program, we alsoexclude parts of the game graph early on if we can determinethat they will not be relevant to explain the user question. Wepresent an implementation in the GProM provenance databasemiddleware. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that theapproach scales to large instances and significantly outperformsthe direct method.

Two-tier Supplier Base Efficiency Evaluation Via Network DEA: A Game Theory Approach
In today's competitive markets, firms try to reduce their supply cost by selecting efficient suppliers using different techniques. Several methods can be applied to evaluate the efficiency of supplier base. This paper develops generalized network data envelopment analysis models to examine the efficiency of two-tier supplier bases under cooperative and non-cooperative strategies where each tier...
متن کاملOptimizing Provenance Computations
Data provenance is essential for debugging query results, auditing data in cloud environments, and explaining outputs of Big Data analytics. A well-established technique is to represent provenance as annotations on data and to instrument queries to propagate these annotations to produce results annotated with provenance. However, even sophisticated optimizers are often incapable of producing ef...
متن کاملUsing SQL for Efficient Generation and Querying of Provenance Information
In applications such as data warehousing or data exchange, the ability to efficiently generate and query provenance information is crucial to understand the origin of data. In this chapter, we review some of the main contributions of Perm, a DBMS that generates different types of provenance information for complex SQL queries (including nested and correlated subqueries and aggregation). The two...
متن کاملAnalysis of implementation of Tradable Green Certificates system in a competitive electricity market: a game theory approach
This paper investigates three models to implement Tradable Green Certificates (TGC) system with aid of game theory approach. In particular, the competition between thermal and renewable power plants is formulated in three models: namely cooperative, Nash and Stackelberg game models. The price of TGC is assumed to be determined by the legislative body (government) which is fixed. Numerical examp...
متن کاملImplementing Unified Why- and Why-Not Provenance Through Games
Using provenance to explain why a query returns a result or why a result is missing has been studied extensively. However, the two types of questions have been approached independently of each other. We present an efficient technique for answering both types of questions for Datalog queries based on a game-theoretic model of provenance called provenance games. Our approach compiles provenance r...
